It was inspiring to see students, residents and doctors from all over the world working together on different topics concerning global surgery. Multimedia Books

Worldwide, 5 billion people are lacking safe surgical care and 2,2 million health workers need to be trained to tackle this problem. ‘Off the job’ training tools, implemented in local training programs are an effective way to make this happen. Global Surgery Amsterdam is working on a series of books that aim to function as a ‘off the job’ method to scale up the surgical training for health workers that are confronted with burn injuries. The principle of ‘one world one standard of care’ means that international standards like the ISBI guideline for burn injuries (2016) are followed. This means that the goals and basic principles should be the same in high- and low-resource countries. This tool can be used to learn about burn care in every setting.

Video assisted learning tool

Jurre van Kesteren of Global Surgery Amsterdam developed a video assisted learning tool for open inguinal hernia repair. The video is available at Touch Surgery, an interactive surgical simulator for all healthcare professionals worldwide; providing a detailed guide to every step of a procedure. Users can quickly learn surgery, instantly test their knowledge, and rehearse for surgery. The Bassini technique provides a straightforward, robust and cost-effective option for groin hernia repair in limited-resource settings, as costly prostheses and laparoscopic approaches can be avoided.

Matthijs Botman of Global Surgery Amsterdam developed a video assisted learning tool for Fisher unilateral cleft lip repair. Users can quickly learn surgery, instantly test their knowledge, and rehearse for surgery.
