Claire partially grew up in LMICs, where she learned about inequalities in health at a young age. After starting medicine at the University of Utrecht, she was determined to get involved in Global Surgery projects aside from the normal curriculum. Claire did internships in plastic surgery and burn care in Malawi and Tanzania, and joined a surgical ear reconstruction mission in Vietnam. She was a board member of the African Albino Foundation from 2015 to 2017. Claire recently co-founded the Dutch Working Group of InciSion, International Surgical Student Network.

Zavira Heinze, MD

Zavira, originally from Aruba, is currently working as a doctor in the United Kingdom. She picked up interest in is active in global health as a medical student. She has experience in the International Federation of Medical Students’ Association, Universities Allied for Essential Medicines, InciSioN Student Network and the Humans of Health. As she is determined to become a humanitarian plastic and reconstructive surgeon, her passion for global surgery comes natural.

Since his medical studies, Thom has had interest in Global Surgery. He has been involved in several activities in this area, such as organizing the symposium ‘surgery in low resource settings‘ in 2014. Thom has also been a working group member of the G4 Alliance, which advocates for improving access to basic surgical care for all people worldwide. Thom's activities and involvement have led to a position as board member of the Netherlands Society for International Surgery. After obtaining his MD degree, Thom specialized in Global Health and Tropical Medicine at the Royal Tropical Institute Amsterdam. Since 2017, he has been working as a surgical resident and researcher at Haydom Lutheran Hospital in Tanzania. In collaboration with the VU medical center Amsterdam and Haydom, Thom carries out and supervises a research project on reconstructive surgical missions in low income countries, with an emphasis on burn wound treatments.
