Biografie

Mark-Bram is Head of the department Plastic Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at Amsterdam UMC. His special interest is reconstructive surgery and gender surgery. Since his early training years as a medical doctor he already had interest in humanitarian surgery projects, evidenced by an surgical internship in Mutare, Zimbabwe. As a plastic surgeon and member of the 'Brigde the Gap Foundation', he participated in 12 humanitarian missions in Vietnam and Laos. As head of department he under scribes the importance of surgical training programs in LMIC’s and the role of doctors for international health care, and fully supports the 'Global Surgery Amsterdam' initiative.

Henri Winters

Biografie

A training in general and plastic surgery, led to his current position of as plastic surgery consultant at the VU University medical center Amsterdam. Henri is associate professor and head of the resident training program. He has a special interest in microsurgery with emphasis on bone reconstruction of the spine and extremities, head and neck reconstructions and breast reconstruction. Besides patient-related activities, Henri has memberships in several societies, including the NVPC as chairman of the national quality control commission and of Santé Pour Tous as chairman of the advice committee. Since 1998 Henri participated in 24 humanitarian missions to developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia. Currently he is volunteer surgeon of Doctors of the World and is involved as faculty researcher on the topic of plastic surgical missions in LMICs.

Jan Maerten Smit

Biografie

After a psychology degree and Medical School at Utrecht University, Jan Maerten did a plastic surgery training at the Erasmus University MC in Rotterdam. A fellowship in Australia, and 3 years as consultant in Rotterdam has led to his current position at VUmc in Amsterdam, focusing on microsurgical reconstructions of oncologic, gender and post-traumatic defects. Besides patient-related activities, he is currently a member of the national plastic surgery education and specialist examination committee. He also represents the plastic surgery society in the Dutch Woundplatform, whose mission it is to improve woundcare by creating and implementing a national quality standard. Jan Maerten is a regular member of the Bridge the Gap mission to Laos the past few years. A combined dentistry, maxillo-facial, and plastic surgery mission, focusing mainly on congenital and acquired head and neck problems and general oral medicine.

A training in general and plastic surgery, led to his current position as a plastic surgery consultant at the VU University Medical Center Amsterdam. Peter has a special interest in pediatric plastic surgery and handsurgery. In his research he is focussing on clinimetrics in cleft lip surgery and the evaluation of treatment and outcome in Robin Sequence. Besides patient-related activities, Peter has memberships in several societies and is a past president of the Dutch Association for Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies. Since 2000 Peter has participated in annual missions to Vietnam and Laos with the Bridge the Gap Foundation, a combined dentistry, maxillo-facial, and plastic surgery mission, focusing mainly on cleft lip and palate, noma and general oral medicine.

Biografie

Paul van Zuijlen is plastic surgeon and director of the Burn Center of the Red Cross Hospital, Beverwijk, The Netherlands. He is Endowed Professor for Burn Care at the Amsterdam UMC, The Netherlands. He studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam and graduated in 1995. He earned his PhD in 2002 on tissue engineered skin and scar assessment tools. Meanwhile he was trained as a Plastic Surgeon at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and the Red Cross Hospital in Beverwijk. Prof. van Zuijlen visited many leading burn centers around the world during a fellowship on burn treatment and reconstructive surgery. He has been member of the board of the International Society for Burn Injuries (2012-2016) and is still a member of the guideline committee of the ISBI. The guidelines are also focused on the resource limited countries. He has become a volunteer surgeon for Doctors of the World. His research interests are in tissue engineering, and innovations in reconstructive surgery, burn treatment, scar assessment and global burn care. He initiated and supervises projects on the development of tissue-engineered cartilage for ear and nose reconstruction and tissue-engineered skin for improvement the outcome of wound healing. Much of his research involves experimental studies concerning image analysis of the collagen architecture and vascularization of human skin and scar tissue. Clinical studies are supervised that aim to improve techniques for reconstructive surgery such as the use of perforator-based flaps, skin stretching and fat grafting. He is developer of the POSAS (Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale).
