Fleur Smit

MD, PhD Candidate

Fleur is a global health doctor in training and PhD-candidate. Since her medicine studies at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, Fleur has been interested in surgery and tropical medicine. During her master’s degree she came into contact with Global Surgery Amsterdam where she has been able to apply both of her interests. As part of a research internship she went to Tanzania for six months and got involved in a trauma research project. She started her PhD thesis on access to care, treatment and one year follow-up of open tibial fractures in Tanzania. To experience the difference in care makes her incredibly motivated to put this topic more on the agenda. In addition to her research, she is specialising as a global health doctor. In the future, she wants to use her specialised skills and knowledge to continue to find ways of improving the inequality in access to surgical care in low resource settings
